For the Crust:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons purple food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla and purple food coloring until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Alternate adding the sifted dry ingredients and buttermilk into the butter mixture, starting and ending with the flour. Stir in the white vinegar.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely before frosting with your choice of frosting.
