Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

  • Author: Chef Lolytta

Description

Tender, savory hamburger steaks smothered in a rich, caramelized onion gravy. A comforting and hearty meal that’s perfect for a weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp butter

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Form into 4 equal-sized oval patties.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, until well-browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Reduce heat to medium. Add the sliced onions to the same skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 8-10 minutes until softened and caramelized. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  4. Gradually pour in the beef broth, scraping the bottom of the pan to release any browned bits. Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the butter until melted.
  5. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Simmer for 5-7 more minutes, until the steaks are cooked through and the gravy is rich and flavorful. Serve hot.

Notes

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
