For the Crust:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the molasses until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the hot water, mixing just until combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  5. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan before serving.

Notes

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
