German Chocolate Cake

A rich and indulgent chocolate cake with a coconut-pecan frosting that is perfect for special occasions.

For the Crust:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup sweetened flaked coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup brown sugar

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Add buttermilk, eggs, oil, and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Stir in boiling water and pour batter into prepared pans.
  3. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Meanwhile, to make frosting, bring coconut, pecans, butter, evaporated milk, and brown sugar to a boil. Stir constantly for 12 minutes, until thickened. Let cool slightly. Spread on cooled cakes.
