For the Crust:

  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.
  4. Gradually add hot water to the batter and stir until smooth. Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.
