For the Crust:
- 4 large yellow onions, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 cup freshly grated Asiago cheese
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
1. Prepare the Crust:
- Preheat oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C). Lightly grease a 9Γ13 inch baking dish.
- Arrange the onion rounds in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in garlic powder, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Pour the creamy sauce evenly over the onions.
- Sprinkle the grated Asiago cheese over the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the onions are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.
