  • Author: Chef Lolytta

Description

Sweet, tender onions are baked in a rich, creamy sauce and topped with nutty, melted Asiago cheese for an unforgettable side dish.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • 4 large yellow onions, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup freshly grated Asiago cheese
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C). Lightly grease a 9Γ—13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange the onion rounds in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
  4. Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in garlic powder, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Pour the creamy sauce evenly over the onions.
  6. Sprinkle the grated Asiago cheese over the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the onions are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  7. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.
