A decadent and classic German dessert featuring layers of rich chocolate sponge cake, whipped cream, and cherries.

For the Crust:
- 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
- Chocolate shavings for garnish
Instructions
1. Prepare the Crust:
- Preheat oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, beat sugar, oil, eggs, and vanilla until smooth. Alternately beat in flour mixture and buttermilk on low speed, beginning and ending with flour mixture.
- Pour batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
- Beat heavy cream and powdered sugar until stiff peaks form. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread with half of the whipped cream and top with half of the cherry pie filling. Place the second layer on top and repeat with remaining cream and cherries. Garnish with chocolate shavings.
